Moximat Eye/Ear Drops is a moxifloxacin-based fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It blocks the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, stopping susceptible bacteria from multiplying and clearing the infection quickly.
Its unique C-7 side chain broadens the spectrum of activity – it reduces the ability of the bacterial efflux pump to flush the antibiotic out and keeps the drug inside bacterial cells for longer. Moximat reaches high concentrations across the relevant ocular structures and carries a reduced probability of resistance developing.
